My name is Jim Broatch and I¡¯m the executive director of The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association of America.
I want to extend a warm welcome to the physicians and other health professionals that have assembled today to learn more about Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS.
I applaud your interest to learn more about CRPS because it can become a very disabling eurological condition that is extremely difficult to treat. One study from the Netherlands reported that 80% of the adults who developed CRPS could not resume their prior activities. In a recent Internet survey conducted by our organization and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, 47% of the respondents contemplated committing suicide and 15% had acted on the impulse (an average of two times).
Their average pain score was 7.9 (based on a rating scale of 1-10).
94% reported that their pain affected their sleep and 60% reported being disabled.
One person once described RSD (the former name for CRPS this way)
If hell were a clinical medical condition, it would look something like reflex sympathetic dystrophy or RSD.
I urge you to form a strong alliance with the CRPS Association in Korea (as our organization has) and urge your government and the pharmaceutical industry to promote greater awareness of this little known, poorly understood condition.
We must discover more effective treatments and hopefully a cure.
The treatments of today cannot be those of tomorrow. Together, we can make a difference.
